Why do the brakes barely work? Due to the axle being solid, you have less tire on the road? Or insufficient drum sizing so you have brake fade? Although on the subject of brakes, if it's a single master cylinder vs dual, that alone might make me think twice about hauling with it.

I dont know about that particular truck, but many trucks from that era had one single brake line out of the master cylinder. So if you blow a line, hose, or wheel cylinder you now have no brakes at all and are just a passenger holding the steering wheel until it comes to a stop.....wherever that is
