Subject: RE: Explain wire welders to me.

coast of Maine
5288,I have had a wire feed welder for about 25 years. The old stick welder got its cords turned into Jumper Cable leads.Wind is an issue as it blows the shielding gas off and Oxygen (my assumption)gets to the weld arc and screws up the weld.Looks like spatter with holes.I do not weld any project full of dirt but have done many that were less than stellar.I learned on sticks.Would never go back.Part of me does not miss the mass amount of smoke inhalation from sticks. You know those black bougars. There is still paint fumes from the heat/burn.I have a decent sized ESAB,bought on ebay or such cheap. The local welding supply does a great job for feed line /guns etc.I also have a dinky small wire feed that an employee found near free,it sets in the shop for tin and exhaust.I think it puts down weld like those black bougers. The crew likes as it cannot burn thru like my bigger unit as they are just learning.I think we could take that small unit to the field with a gen set if needed.I put the ESAB on a 48/40 pallet,we can move in the shop with a pallet jack or forklift it to another area.Go to a decent sized machine and leave sticks behind. If you wan to learn and buy a good used a welding supply guy will let you know when a guy trades one in..its a safer bet I suppose than marketplace .
