Consider a welding rod. the metal in the center is the sacrificial material to fill, and the flux coating provides the shielding gas. Just as there are different material, flux, sizes,strength, and amp ranges, so are there for a wire feed.
When teaching welding classes, we start with rods, easier to see and change for different rods. Also works in windy conditions.
Have many, several stick, MIG, TIG, suitcase, flux core, generator powered, spool. Several different gases.
Best suggestion would be take a welding class. Then spend some time with the suppliers
