I'm all for rewarding those that put sweat equity in the business with a larger share. I just don't see leaving the rest of the family out almost cold. It isn't really a factor what they want to do with the money.....money not land. I think things should definitely be done to preserve the land as a unit, but it is ok to require money outlay to do so. Definitely give those with sweat equity in the land the ability to steer the future, but they shouldn't get almost all the money value as well. It gives me and has given me a lot of drive knowing that someday I'll have to be in the position to fund land aquisition. Has made me obtain my own base to use to as the foundation to aquire what is not my share. I've also witnessed some that have or will 'get it all' be fairly lazy and lack the drive for innovation and have actually damaged the long term arc of the farm.
I never said I was going to leave anyone out cold, I was just asking what ethics has to do with it.
