nc ks | What is your reasoning for trying to run as small of equipment as possible and sit on it more hours. Bigger doesn't always mean more complicated. Bigger also helps with your biggest fear of timeliness. Newer doesn't necessarily mean less downtime electonics or no electronics. And...the electronics aren't going away on machinery of any size. That is not jd or caseIH, that is our government and the shady grifters that gin up environmental nightmare scenarios.
Just about everything of every size with a diesel engine is going to have an ecm and emissions and that is where most of the electronic troubles arise. The 8x00, 10, and 20 series deeres have minimal engine gremlins and very rarely quit on a guy during field operations. They can be mated to fairly large ground driven planters. That said, in our experience the hydraulic driven planters without unit chains have had much less field downtime than their predecessors, but it entails a bit more electronics(that are pretty darn reliable). You are correct that being a small farmer with small new equipment is about impossible these days, but I think it would be cheaper and less frustrating to just buy bigger affordable used equipment.
And kudos for storing your grain and working through the winter delivering it. Like you say, that can be very profitable.
