Coles County, Illinois | Your question has two answers. I would want any nitrogen source incorporated to prevent volitization. Herbicide placement is a matter of weed species targeted and mode of action of the herbicide. Take for example Waterhemp. It's a small seeded broadleaf. Being small seeded it doesn't have the reserves to germinate from very deep. If one is applying a group 15 herbicide that herbicide is absorbed through the roots and shoots. You'll want this as shallow as possible but it needs some moisture to move into the target. A light rain after application would be best. If one is targeting Velvetleaf then the situation changes. Being larger seeded it has more seed energy that allows it to germinate from deeper. If one has chosen a triazine herbicide to control it, the herbicide must be present where the roots of the weed are to be absorbed. Triazine herbicides disrupt photosynthesis so it is translocated to the leaves once the plant has emerged. Deeper incorporation with more moisture would be better for control.
Tank mixing herbicides and multiple weed species complicate these decisions. | |
