Soil type plays a factor. If you overapply in November or March on clay soil odds are you won't see much of a advantage. 2015 comes to mind, wet year and we didn't see much of any ill effects on N loss with 25 inches of rain in may june and july.

Stand loss was the killer.

If you apply in season can typically apply 10-15% less for same or slightly more yield goal. Just depends what you want to accomplish and if there is enough time to do it.
