You put into words what I have been thinking for the past few years. Cost of machinery whether new or used is out of line.
When I started farming 30-40 years ago I did quite a bit of custom farming. I could buy a new machine and pay for it within a year or two and still have a good machine left. Now, by the time you pay for a new machine it’s wore out or going to need a lot of costly repairs.

Would disagree that used machinery prices are out of line. Currently can buy more machinery capacity for the $ than any time in my farming career.
I have an equipment business and have for over 20 years now, there was a 3 year period from 2014-2017 where used stuff totally collapsed. I remember making a post where I’d never seen $100,000 go so far. Double edged sword too, stuff was cheap, and the dollar hadn’t been diluted down so far.

Going to use this as an example. Kinze 3800 24 row box planters , can be bought cheaper today than anytime since they were made.
I’m talking tractors and combines mainly. Those planters are because bulk fill has renedered them into obsolescence. Even though functional, nobody wants them. Nice little older tractors today have not collapsed like they did ten years ago. If anything they’ve increased over the most recent couple years.

You have a lot to learn if you think a 3800 box planter is obsolete and can't get the job done. Mine has row clutches and doubt if it would bring $7500 if sold it, so we keep planting with it.. Bulk fill would be nice, but buying vs what we plant with currently would not improve the bottom line. If more people would push a pencil when it comes to $ invested in machinery purchases and how it effects the bottom line. There would be less whining about lack of profitability.
Fairly certain I don’t have a lot to learn. Never said they won’t get the job done. But they are about as in demand as a flip phone. Which will also get its main job done.

The reason they aren't in demand is because too have become lazy when it comes to physical work and don't understand what it takes to be a low cost producer of commodities.

Normally I agree with most of your thoughts.

However I get 40 more acres per day planted with a ccs. And that’s without a seed tender. Bet I have little to no more money invested in my ccs planter vs your box planter as well.

I did buy a 6 year old tractor last week for 1/3 the out the door price of the equivalent brand new machine. However that 6 year old tractor listed for 1/2 of what the 2025 tractor listed at. So is that a fair cost comparison?

6 years ago I would have bought that tractor new vs a 2500hr used one. And I don’t buy new equipment
