Time has value also.... not likely I can work as fast or efficiently as someone who looks at those machines every day...
But there are demands on my time everyday
and for many of us, it is the demand of the off farm employer...
not including time for family, community and other callings

I had a 2188 for 10 years and really liked that machine. It would never do the work of the machine that replaced it
the idea that a single individual can do everything is (IMHO) a misplaced idea
Per NAT, the typical farmer is a Millwright, Chemist, Economist, Farm Manager and Master Carpenter.
I know I cannot make the grade there....

You don't have to be every one of them, 3 of the 5 gets you down the road pretty well. If you choose to work alone, it is definitely harder than figuring out a way to work with others that might have skill sets that fill in the blanks. If a guy wants to say this is mine and I did all the work, it is a tougher road but also a choice made.
There are tons of 50k combines out there that can easily do twice what a 2188 could do. I loved our 2188, but time moved on and more needed to be done in the same or less time. The biggest thing I have with dealer inspections is they include everything to make it perfect. I don't deal with a dealer shop hardly at all, but the one time I had a tractor in there they did an inspection and it was hard for me to say no even though I didn't give a rats what they think of me. Imagine what it's like for a guy that relies on them. Poof, 20k goes bye bye when he could have done the things actually necessary at home for 3k in parts. |
