I could be wrong but I don't think Fred left Ames with intentions to end up in Lincoln. Lincoln was the landing spot after Chicago didn't work out.
Fred was born in Lincoln.
His maternal grandfather was the coach at Nebraska.
His grandfather is gone, so Fred was finally able to run the planter and the combine.
Fairly common Midwest succession story.
