Sioux County, NWIA | I’m very skeptical of these claims that the 6.2 crank failures stem from journal surface finish or machining debris. If either problem were the cause, I would expect to see failures happening closer to 50 miles rather than the 50,000 miles I’ve been hearing. There are videos of these engines being torn down after failure and it is interesting to note that all of the crank main journals have a peculiar tanned color consistent with overheating of the metal. The most likely cause of that is inadequate lubrication, and caused by something that is progressively limiting lubrication to the bearings as the engine ages. If there were something compromising the lower end lubrication from new, these engines would never get anywhere near 50,000 miles. | |
