SW OH | I worked with a guy for a short time about 5 years ago. He was a retired high school science teacher. He lived his whole life in Addams County Ohio. He went to a local college for his teaching degree in the early 70s.
He claimed that in his college education there a lot of focus on radiation research in and around Addams County. Back in the 40s there were many deposits of something that contained high levels of isotopes needed for enriching weapons grade plutonium. I don't remember if it was the government or private, but the "A" plant was built in Pike County to do the enrichment process. As the plant was being built millions of tons of material was dug up and transported to the plant. About the time the plant started processing a deposit in the upper western plains was discovered where the isotopes were 100 times richer. So they returned some of the millions of tons back to where it came from around the A plant.
This coworker claimed the per capita rate for the population of Addams County is one of the highest in the nation. It is believed that this is a result of digging up and disturbing all these isotopes. Also that there are many cancer research facilities across the area but disguised as dentist, doctors, health clinics, and other "medical" offices. Half of the employees I work with are from Addams county. This information seems to be common knowledge for most of the county residents.
