HP printers are pretty picky.
In earlier IBM PC DOS days, setting up any printer was not a piece of cake...PIA sometimes
By Win 3.1, if the printer's software was installed, usually no issues....
With Win 7, it could detect most common printers, and install the drivers, if you had internet access.
If using a router, a person might have to find the IP address, and manually insert it in Win printer setup menu.
With Win 11, it appears Windows does port/etc scanning, and I suspect the MAC address is used to determine what the device is. If true, then Win has a MAC database to determine what a device is
