One drawback to the coolant heater is the radiator is designed to cool the coolant. So the coolant heater looses some of its effectiveness. Multiple magnetic heaters can be used at the same time. Probably someone makes a tractor blanket to hold the heat in place.
Yes, but they've let the thermosiphon aspect go a little in most cases, plus the thermostat should stay closed, so the block would be heating one side of the thermostat, and the fluid on the other side of the hose in many cases won't have a slope to circulate so won't transfer much heat. IF you have an engine with a thermostat to radiator hose that slopes up to the radiator, drain enough fluid so it's below the level of the outlet in the radiator, and you'll stop that heat loss.
I don't know why people say the magnetic heater isn't effective, not as efficient as a block heater, or as large usually, but the oil is much lighter, and has a much lower specific heat than the coolant and engine block, so the oil can easily heat from 0 to 70 or 100F. Specific heat of water is 1, oil is about .5 (btu/lb) | |
