I prefer a closed shoulder. They might not have quite as much traction but I think they wear better and look nicer if you want to rotate them to a trailer when they are half wore down. Usually if it's going to come down to getting stuck or not because of the shoulder being open or closed I try to park in a better place and haul it further with the cart..
