Southwest Michigan | Not that it solves the problem, but I think planting later and a medium to high population of plants help. When I have tried to plant early with lower populations, they are at the tender stage for an extended time and the deer really hammer them. Planting in the later part of the window instead of super early makes the beans jump out of the ground and grow aggressively. We shoot plenty of deer with permits, I just can’t guard them 24/7.
I don’t recommend planting in June, but June planted crops come out of the ground fast and get some height before getting attacked. I have had my deer damaged replanted June 7th beans keep up with the rest of the field with light deer damage. | |
