UP / Thumb of Michigan | Until we were in our 60's. all our camping trips were with motorcycles and staying in a Time Out pop up camper I pulled behind my bike. We were perfectly happy doing this. It was a step up from tent camping for sure. For some reason, my ability to sleep on the ground
ended at about the same time I quit drinking.
Our travel requirements and accomodations may not match what many like is all I'm getting at.
And, over the years, we've stayed at a lot of motels and hotels as well. Its fine if its a multi day stay in one location. I've grown to despise the variety of accommodations available on the road. The unpacking and repacking 8 or 9 hours later is dreaded by me anyway.
Doing Route 66 has been a dream of mine for 40 years. Was planning on doing it on a motorcycle. Never happened. Not sure my back and legs would allow it now. I turned 66 last year, so doing Route 66 when I was 66 just seemed to have a nice ring to it. But moving got in the way of that.
So, last April, we loaded up in our new used Sprinter Class C. Bought it specifically for the trip. Going to attack 66 finally. Wife and I are very fortunate in that there was no ending date specified to the trip. We didn't haul a car though. Trip took 33 days, we stayed in motels 3 nights. Camped somewhere the rest of the time. After a few days, we each had our jobs figured out, setting up and taking down went pretty quickly. As quick or quicker than leaving a motel would have been. Plan was to take the MH on the trip and back, sell it the day after we got home. But that part didn't happen. Wife had lined up a campground to stay at for her class reunion in July. Thats just to late "here" to sell one. Although we advertised it all summer, I also took it to 6 or 7 car races last summer. Every track was accommodating. Just back it up over to that fence over there and come on in. Nice for me anyway to just walk back out of a race and go to bed. Most of the races I went to are anywhere from 2 to 5 hours away from my home. Not a big drive when I was a kid. I don't like those drives home now though. Bought it with 16K miles, it has 32K on it now.
So, I have a spot to put it inside for the winter. Going to advertise it starting in March I guess. Hope it goes away, that was the plan all along. BUT- if it doesn't happen- I've been considering a trip across the northern US this year. Hauling a trailer with my motorcycle in it this time. I suppose I'd be OK with doing that as well.
