Free markets mean that we are directly competing with the entire world for the products we produce while paying local taxes and regulations for everything we buy including labor. How did all the factory workers in Ohio do when they started competing in a "free market" with slave labor in China and no environmental or safety regulations in Indonesia?

5 years is tomorrow in a yearly seasonal industry so no meaningful changes unless the gov cancels all biofuel mandates or insurance/support subsidies.

The key thing to remember when understanding Ag production is that it is a luxury lifestyle and there is a surplus of people who would be happy to do it given the opportunity, so there is no reason for it to ever be profitable. It is also true that with modern equipment and practices we could cut the number of active farmers in half and overall efficiency and yields would go up or at least hold steady.

There is no reason for the industry to make room for small guys, it doesn't need them and the economics are screaming that it doesn't want them.
