| This has been happening for a while. Looking around my neighborhood a lot more land has changed hands in the last 5 years than my entire childhood. Bigger chunks getting split up or moved to a bigger operation. I'm not a big guy at all and the question I keep asking myself is am I still going to be able to be profitable and sustainable in 5 years? I think I'll be in much better shape then than now, but I make moves to preserve my future every year. Not everyone does. Not everyone needs to. Being 38, I need to at least think about it... it's too soon to stop trying to grow and get better. At this point that still looks like more land, operated more efficiently.
The last census of ag farms were smaller, not bigger, than they were last time around. Getting rid of a handful of 10,000+ acre guys changes that a lot (not that there's anything wrong with those guys as long as they can make it work). | |
