farmer82 - 12/4/2025 15:28 Here is my idea, offer a 50 billion tax free prize to a company that can make a 4 door car or small suv that gets 100 mpg. It would need to be made in USA . I had a 81 Volkswagen pickup that got 46 mpg. There is no reason why nearly a half century later the 100 mpg could not be done.

The problem is, no one wants to buy that vehicle.    It would be an overgrown golf cart that has a quarter mile time of about 20 seconds and takes a full mile on an level airport runway to hit 60 mph.

Americans love Pickups and full size SUV's (Suburbans, Tahoe's, Excursions and Expeditions) with big V-8 engines.

Hardly anyone wanted to buy the 81 VW pickup either.   In 1981, which happened to be its peak sales year, VW sold 33,879 Rabbit pickups.   In comparison in 2018 Ford sold 909,000 F-150's, which was its peak sales year.
