West Central Illinois | Not sure why you want a large RV. There are lots of smaller rigs which are quite comfortable. I think your idea of renting is a great way to compare.
When I retired I wanted to buy a small fifth wheel. Wife said no way unless we try one first to make sure we don’t kill each other in a confined space.
A good friend loaned us his class B for ten days. We drove to the UP of Michigan for fall colors. Loved it! Very nimble, 17 mpg and lots of flexibility for our schedule.
When we got home we discussed the pros and cons and only thing it lacked was room for more than two people. Because we wanted room to take a grandkid or two, we ordered a small fiberglass fifth wheel - only 21 ft. It’s made by Escape Trailers in Canada. Has a queen bed over the fifth wheel and the rear dinette converts to a bed for the kiddos.
Pull it with a Chevy 1500 diesel. Get 18-19 pulling it and average about 21 for the whole trip. Very stable at all speeds and in the mountains.
Our thing is trying to see about all of the national parks so we put a lot of miles on. Appreciate staying in the parks to be handy for hiking.
Not for everyone but fits our travel plans perfectly.
Tried to upload a picture but it won’t let me
