CK KS | I am trying to find some acres to put a little more silage corn out. The only place I have close to home that would be favorable was corn that was harvested for grain last year. Anybody in a similar climate to central Kansas have experience with corn-on-corn rotations? Other option is a sorghum silage, but I have been trying to get away from that as there are not really any good options for weed control. Pre-emerge herbicide program between the two would be similar. Post-emerge herbicide is available with corn. What are some things I need to pay attention to? Does the planting date need to change? Typically plant 3rd week of April. Ground is getting zone sampled so will have a good idea of available nutrients.
On top of that, I had about 20/a of silage corn this last year following 1st cut on an old alfalfa field. It was planted May 15th with no added Nitrogen. Did not yield the best as we turned hot and try right at tassel. That silage popped hot on nitrates, any idea why it would be hot?
