NW Iowa | We have a big diesel pusher and pull a Jeep Wrangler. It is a 4 season rig with large tanks that can go for many days without needing to dump or fill. We've been through around 30 states in an RV. Ownership costs aside, which can be significant, travel expenses are not necessarily that different from driving a vehicle that gets average mpg and staying in decent motels. Driving through cities can be pretty stressful and I try to avoid rush hour if at all possible. Free places like Walmart or rest areas can be ok to stop for the night when on the road. Casinos, city /county/state parks often have cheap spots. We like having a rig that has no set-up time and doesn't have to be plugged in. Just park, hit the level button if needed, and close the curtains. If at a campground, might take 5 minutes. Lots of BLM land and National Park areas in the West and SW where you can park for free for 14 days or inexpensive campsites. We've also stayed in luxury RV Resorts in AZ and California that are expensive. Still about 50% or so of the local cost of a decent room. Definitely like having our own bed to sleep in, own bathroom to use, own good food to eat, often with a great view. It's not all roses, but we like it. | |
