| We have a regular bumper pull camper. Probably spend 20 or so nights a year in it. Nice to have the pickup. 11ish mpg pulling it. We have a Texas state park pass. You can randomly pull in to most of them if you don’t want a specific spot. Super cheap with the pass. The sought after parks and specific spots especially you have to book a couple months out. Place we go in red river we book before we leave for the next year.
We’ve never had trouble traveling somewhere like for a wedding and just finding a nearby spot to park it.
Takes about 30 minutes to setup and 30 to take down. Faster if you’re not terribly worried about leveling it perfect for a longer stay. For one night I just make sure the head of my bed isn’t slightly lower than the foot and call it good. You can save 5 minutes not running the equalizer hitch if your pickup is heavy and your not in rough or curvy roads.
The people with the big diesel rigs are usually there when we roll in and there when we leave so I think those folks usually stay longer to make all their effort and fuel worthwhile. We always have to go back to work so we do a lot of 2 night type deals.
Edit to add, make sure you have a place under a shed for whatever you get. Campers are really junky, they aren’t made to sit outside ironically enough. Cheaper ones have axles barely rated for what they weigh and tires these days are horrible so put some high dollar extra ply tires on it. Because if you blow one it will damage it maybe just a little or maybe total the thing.
