Bet it's a snap ring off one of the planets.
Be interesting to see what it is.
I would also remove the plug that sits under your brakes
If that little area is full af crap it's usually time for
brakes.
Looks like an external snap ring to me, planet snap rings are internal if memory serves correctly...so I'm thinking it may be the big snap ring holding the planet carrier to the axle, but it's hard to say from the picture. No scale.
