| We went conventional this past year, precisely for the reason you mentioned which was cost savings. We didn’t do a side-by-side but we were very happy with our yields and we will be conventional again next year. We switched to conventional last time the farm economy was in the toilet and then went back to fully traited corn for a few rotations when we started to see some pockets of rootworm pressure. The cost savings was pretty significant with a price range of $130-$200/bag (the 2 cheapest hybrids being the highest yielding and most profitable). If you are used to buying from the 2 big names you might be disappointed with the selection of numbers that are available but by shopping around a little there are plenty of good hybrids out there. We planted corn from Pioneer, Wyffels, Golden Harvest, Viking, and Jacobsen this year. Weed control was very good overall with the exception of a little foxtail on a couple fields, which we expected. | |
