Math is a whole lot easier reading the gauge on a true 1000 gallon tank that you can only fill to 800. 1000 gallon total when the gauge reads 50% will have 500 gallons. Calling that same tank an 800 gallon will throw simpletons like me for a loop when the gauge reads 20% and needs filled. Does it have 200 gallons or 160 gallons?
