WC Ohio | 100% agree it isn't for everyone, we've been doing it for 6 years now and have seen our OM rise after starting covers along with liquid manure from the neighbor who needs to get rid of it. We have been no-tilling since the late 90's and we were already half way to being a cover cropper, then the H2Ohio program came out so we decided to try cover crops. Whether that program came out or not we were still going to start, now it just covers the cost.
Defiantly takes time to get your soil to where you want it and there are a lot of growing pains, which is why I think most guys give up after a year or two. There is no patience and they see a yield hit so they go right back to the way they'd be doing it. Also a lot of different ways to make it work, drill, drone, and plane. Like you said Weave, not for everyone but it seems like our farms are really taking shape with increased OM, water holding capacity and weed control. | |
