Subject: Cover Crops

Boone Co. Iowa
I bought a 40' drill on 7.5" spacing for cover crops. Got my acres done, plus just short of 1000 acres custom work for 6 different farmers.

This was my 2nd year of cover cropping, yields dropped off but comparable to other farmers due to rust and excess rain.

One guy wanted to try it, had a neighbor who had excellent looking beans who no-tilled into standing rye. Farmer with many acres who did not want any cost share, just wanted to try it.

One guy was i terested in the cost-share $, I think he was going to get around $70-80+.

One guy going organic, we put out a thick stand of rye for weed suppression and hairy vetch for N. He is planning on crimping it in spring.

One guy loves the covers, he feeds a lot of beef and we went into his silage acres.

One guy, we did a small patch in a nestled field with a tree windbreaker where he will keep cows all winter.

It isn't a revolution, but I did zero advertising, and this is a spot with relatively few acres.

Cover crops aren't for everyone, but was a little surprised at the demand.
