40 PSF is really just residential load. You should be able to screw to the columns with structural screws or some sort of Simpson bracket, I would think. There are really heavy rated screws out there now. Might have to scab a board under the ledger for more support, but the column should carry it to concrete. There are guys building houses like that, but the header is screwed in every two feet.
