N.W. Ohio | My church has 40 acres that is rented to a family farm corporation who are mostly members of the church on a share crop basis. At the end of the season, the son (who is no longer a member there) comes and presents to the council a review of the growing season and crop harvested along with the price they received for the crop as the farm also manages the sale of the crop. It’s a very large farm corporation. They raise some specialty crops along with corn, soybeans and wheat. I will tell you this, they make a very good return for the church. One time when I was on council, another member said, you know, we never try to see if any other farming members would be interested in farming the land. Another says, we have one sitting right here and looked at me.. ugh…so they wondered if I was interested? Well, I already knew the current guys were doing an outstanding job. I just politely thanked them for asking but I declined. I didn’t need to be under the microscope to that extent, and I didn’t believe I could make the church more money. It would’ve caused a lot of hard feelings regardless, and I definitely didn’t want to be a center of that in my church. Some things are more important than money. | |
