My thoughts are the cables save lives.
Today's vehicles are for the most part 4wd or awd and when you point one of them in the direction of the median they will go across to the other side. Everything these days are aerodynamic and there is no drag under the rig and the skip across.
It flat out sucks for the recovery guys getting the vehicle out of the spaghetti but no one else was involved in the accident.
