Subject: RE: Autonomous tractors

Chebanse, IL.....

We utilize all the JD add-ons you mention. They work. But, I don't consider them autonomous any more than I think the first television remote control from 70 yrs ago leads to autonomous tv viewing. It's a comfort item added for the use by human operators.

Turn automation works fairly well, except when it comes to point rows with a steep angle. Grain cart fill works fairly well, but it's not able to stop the combine grain unload.

Factory Robo-tractors have operated in our area now for 3 years. Seems most problems stem from limited abilities of cameras you mentioned. Did you ever personally turn on the end while working on a dirty dusty night and find that whatever you were pulling had a rock in it somewhere and was sliding. You didn't know it because you couldn't see it until you turned and looked over at your last pass. Robos have visual and decision making restrictions. But, they have a solution...for now. They just stop and sit until human help arrives.

Keep in mind that many of the things you mention also require much of the modification to the combine etc. I don't think you'll be able to just go buy a robo-tractor, hook it up to your DMI 930B and go chisel plow. You may have to revamp the whole tool shed vs going out & searching for dependable hired help, which is apparently impossible for some.

As far as the demand and research, I'm sure that's nothing new. Mfg have always researched things that seemed public driven. IH had a turbine tractor looking for a better engine. They work well in pulling tractors, but apparently not in farm tractors. JD announced it's work in electric tractors, starting with a European model. Haven't heard a word about it since.

Most of the ag public I know of are asking why we can't have a gasoline powered 80-150 hp tractor again. Modern gasoline auto & pickup engines are unbelievably efficient with very few environmental restrictions that diesels have. So, where's the research tractor? There must be someone @ JD that remembers gasoline.
