Faunsdale, AL | Have also used RedKote. More often with diesel tanks than gasoline, but last can I bought I noticed it said not recommended for diesel! I haven’t had any trouble out of the 3 old Deere tanks I’ve done.
Prep is the key. First one I did was a very rusty little tank off an old CAT pony motor. That failed in a few years and I burned it out, prepared it properly and recoated it. It holding after more than a decade.
I have done a couple that looked like a colander even after brazing up the worst of the rusty places. So my program is brazing or welding for strength and RedKote for sealing all the pinholes and preventing rust. I always prepare and coat the outside surfaces that are touching pads or straps when there’s rust in those areas as well as the interior where water collects.
I do the real prep after any brazing or welding. Everything before that is to make the tank safe to weld on. Old repair shop here in town that’s in the 3rd generation of the same family always has had the policy that they will only repair a tank if it has no smell of gasoline or fuel in it. | |
