Rather than waiting for smoke to build up, it helps to start fan a minute or two before starting welding or heavy grinding so air is moving in the correct direction. A dedicated welding area with its own fan is best.
Yes, put an exhaust fan in the welding area and put it on a timer switch so you don't forget to turn it off and let it run all night.
Smoke-Eater-type recirculating fans for welding areas are expensive and troublesome.
