ECIL | When we bought our home the fireplace was originally designed to burn wood. The previous owner had a gas insert installed because the wood burning fireplace didn't function properly. I don't know what exactly was wrong with it. Three years after we bought the house I had a wood burning insert installed. The gas insert had a few problems, like most of the heat going up the chimney and a very noisy fan. It also tended to flash back when lit, to the degree it burned the hair off my arm up to my elbow a couple times. I had enough of that and went with wood. The wood insert we have now puts out great heat, is quiet since I don't need to run the fan even though it has one, and looks a lot better. We've had the insert for 14 years now. When we had it installed it ran a little over $6K, including installation and a new triple lined flue going up past the second floor. | |
