We built our house in 2011 and on the first night we moved in we said......we screwed up the living room. It was too small and the TV which was above the fireplace was uncomfortable to watch. I had a plan to fix it but had to wait about 9 years before I finally decided to do it. We didn't have to do any foundation or roof work as the plan was to simply get rid of a covered porch we didn't use but it did require some substantial rafter bracing as a load bearing wall was being moved. Once that was done to the engineer's specs we did this. Things we did differently the second time were to raise the fireplace off the ground and build a hearth in front of it. We also wanted a raw looking mantle. The fireplace is a gas unit with remote control. It gets used often this time of year. You can see the edge of the TV on the left side of the photo. I can sit on the couch or my recliner and not have to tilt my head up to see it.
