I know you said built in but this is what we have. We had a free standing wood fireplace but got tired of the mess and work to start a fire and maintain the temperature we wanted. We put this in and no it is not just for looks it gives off plenty of heat. It will warm the room up quickly.
The fireplace cost $4500 installed. The brick was there before for the wood burning fireplace.
