Schlegel Farms, Hagerstown Indiana | We have had one of these Koenders Windmills for years, and I never understood how they worked on really windy days.
For those who are curious, the windmill powers a piston pump that aerates our pond.
I watched it a lot yesterday, and what I don't understand is how it works on very windy days.
It will get to spinning very fast, and then the head turns away from the wind and slows almost to a stop before turning back towards the wind and taking off again.
It was back and forth all day yesterday
I know it's a safety feature to prevent over-revving and damaging itself, but I don't understand how it works.
The tailfin is just a straight, flat sheet, so does it have something to do with the angle of the blades?
How can it face the wind at a certain speed and then turn away?
