2011 would have paid for one in a year. I think that bin cost $1.50 a bushel or so. I don't have the numbers in front of me but I think harvest corn was 4 or 5 and I sold corn the next summer for $8.40 at Cargill
One used to could buy a bin for $1 a bushel back in the late 80's and 90's.
I would guess most any drought year. 83, 88 come to mind. Also when one could seal corn for $2.50 or more and cash was $1.30. That has been along time ago.
Here, one can usually lock in better than .30 just in basis gain. Harvest basis is generally .30-.35 under the Dec and July basis is generally 0-.10 over the July.
I almost forgot. 2025. Harvest price on beans cash $9.25. Cash price $11.20 in November. There was an additional .10 for freight on the November price as it was a better location. During harvest the line was prohibitive.
The electric and other costs are fairly low here. My goal is to harvest under 20 and am perfectly happy if the corn goes to town at that.
A nickle a bushel would be the high if I need to dry it and most years only runs part of a cent.
The extra handling is not much as the cost to bin it is the same or less than just loading the truck. ( It takes less time to bin than load a truck as there is less messing around.}
I do spend a cent or a bit over moving the auger and checking bins during the off season. That figures my pickup, gas etc. My labor is worth less in June and July than in October and November.
Full disclosure. I do have years I just break even.
