| Dairy and feeding out cattle is differnt world then cow calf. There are a few threads on this site about drylotting cow calf pairs and some of the bigger operations may buy or use some better ingrediants if they are feeding stalks or some other by-product, but I think that the vast majority of cow calf are feeding some sort of hay/grass based diet, maybe some cornsilage but many of your questions probably do not exactly apply to this segment of the industry, esp. like in this area where most herds are a part time gig and are quite small. The cows pay their way and allow small tract owners to keep the small family farm or part of it in the family. I personally have no interest in any more technology then I already have, which is very little, buy basically no feed outside of mineral and salt to feed free choice far as reducing costs this operation has been set up as a low input grass-based operation so few costs to cut, best route to increased profits is better marketing or niche markets which to me is for the next generation to explore.
