It’s hard to put a number on it for a goal as every year is different.
Don’t get stuck watching cash prices. You need to separate the futures and basis price decisions. Some years the best thing you can do is sell an HTA the spring before and wait on basis. Other times doing absolutely nothing until you’re ready to deliver is the right answer.
I generally don’t like to set basis more than 30 days before delivery.
