I think you underestimate what some of the Founding Fathers were into.
A lot of them were real estate speculators, or worse. They were voting their own interests in a lot of cases.
Ed Asner wrote a pretty good book on it. "The Curmudgeonly Historian".
Everyone who signed the Declaration knew that they were committing high treason and were subject to the brutal punishment of hanging, drawing and .
Yet they did it.
Many suffered severe personal losses.
12 of the 56 had their homes pillaged and plundered - 9 fought and died in the war.
