It is what the body chooses to do with the energy that matters. It can burn it for energy, store it for later use, excrete it in urine, feces, breath, heat and probably some things I'm forgetting.
Hormones determine what the body chooses to do with the calories. Not all food supplied calories create the same hormonal response.
So in energy a calorie is a calorie. But it doesn't matter. It is true but immaterial. Hormones determine what happens to that energy. Whether it is stored or utilized or even wasted.
