Nebraska aka the boondocks
I am not a cattle producer anymore, just a lazy row crop guy. But, I know so many cattle people and people in the industry. Being so close to the epicenter of the Tyson debacle, I have two words that I want to see, and it also applies to ag in general. That is communication and transparency!!!
Over the weekend I have have made and received many calls on the Tyson deal. One person evening asking me to use my connections in Lincoln for help. I told them, the cat is already out of the bag, the people who should have been watching over this relationship didn’t, and some folks knew, kept quiet because it was best for them. So be it. Much of what I have read almost poo poos the significance of the Lexington plant, not sure if it’s purposeful, incompetence, or both.
Consider this, the Lexington plant had a capacity of 5,000 and employed 3200. If that is not significant, then consider the AI summary of JBS in grand island, and then the percent of total processing it does in the country, and then ponder how this event was not significant! In ag, we get one good salad tossing after the next, using terms like, better than expected, it’s the best we got, our thoughts are with them…. It truly is sad. Here is the AI summary

The JBS Grand Island beef processing plant has a daily capacity of about 6,000 head of cattle and an annual capacity of over 1.4 million head. This two-shift facility is one of the largest of its kind, processing a significant portion of the U.S. cattle supply.
Daily capacity: Approximately 6,000 head of cattle.
Annual capacity: More than 1.4 million head.
Operations: The plant runs two shifts and has the capacity to process roughly 5% to 6% of the total U.S. daily beef capacity.
