How long does it take to process a 5x5 or 6x5 round bale? Looking to expand our feed yard…bale processing would be necessary with added supplement mixed as well.
Alfalfa haylage, dry alfalfa or small grain haylage would be what we would process and feed. Possibly corn silage as well.
It all depends on the hay bale and how sharp the knives are and how well you want the hay ground up.
10 to 15 minutes on up to 30 minutes for long stem brome hay tightly rolled up.
We have a Kuhn Knight VSL 150 (I think that's right). We added an extra knife on the top of the screw to help speed up the hay cutting, especially if the bale just sets on top of the screw.
Finally decided to get a Highline bale processor to speed things up. Makes for an extra step but worth it, especially when using straw.
Straw will just blow apart in the mixer and not get cut to the size I wanted.
Contemplating trading balers and getting the knife package. Should pay for itself in mixing time savings - fuel and hours and wear on the mixer.
Purchased a truck with a Jaylor twin screw mixer a few years ago so we can travel further quicker. Motor blew up and should have it back before winter. We like the job it does mixing when we did use it. |
