| Well the old sheep man in me, I personally like to use a sheep hook. The hook is spring steel and quite a bit smaller. You put a wooden handle on them that is quite a bit longer than the metal Koehn ones. I've used a Koehn, was ok but felt hook was a little bit big some calves could get out of it. Over time it pulled apart so I welded it up. Then the hook broke where the threaded rod went into handle. We then went back to using sheep hook w/wooden handle.
Downside is a sheep hook is quite bit longer, doesn't fit in side x side used to be you stored sheep hook on pickup stock rack side so it was out of way and didn't get broke. Long enough you can use it horseback and lift lambs up onto saddle or use a foot. For running on 4 wheeler I liked it because give you a little more room and could balance wood pole on your left arm better tucking it under your arm a little. Downside is if you do catch calf, and let go of pole it won't fall off calf will drag it. Remember its made for lambs and ewes.
We leave ours at shop door next to 4 wheelers, we only tag first calf heifers daily so right next to horse (4- wheeler).
