New London, Wisconsin | I have been asked frequently. Mostly by form letters, sometimes by locals calling, occasionally in person.
It's true businesses get hit up a lot. I had finally decided to follow this pattern
Form letters mostly get tossed.
Business to business (local). almost always gets a yes. They understand.
Non business person to business always seemed to say, "Well you can just write it off anyway." No, they didn't qualify as a write off, and no I didn't donate. The attitude is why I said no. The cause was rarely meaningful except to them.
My favorite donation, and I do try to do this each year. Is to give to something or someone who did not ask or expect anything and to do it anonymously.
The reason I do this is a family member now deceased who made such a big stink about the style or note used in a thank you from me. My personal thanks or calls, which I always gave, were not enough for her.
