| The plan all along has been to replace the US cow herd with third world beef. The independent feeders and cow calf producers have become too uppity and expect to make some of the profit of the four major packers. Then there is beef on dairy, which for all intents and purposes is government subsidized beef production. Very few of those will ever see an auction market and price discovery. It will be interesting to see how many heifers that were held back this fall for breeding, aren't bred after all.
As far as Trump, there's always a bigger bear. As much as I dislike the events of the last few weeks, the previous course was socialism. Take your land, water, grazing rights and discontinue raising cattle in the name of climate change. While we all know beef prices will come down little or any, the cost of living will likely play a big part in mid term elections and 2028. If you wanted to break the market you couldn't have planned it any better. Run prices up till there is enough outrage that imports come flooding back in. The relatively short period of time packers had to pony up will be replaced by years of (corrupt) business as usual.
