Subject: RE: Reminded of the old soils guys

Mason City, IL
I miss Ed Winkle and others also. I went to a bunch of no-till meetings and talked personally with him and other (Ed. Moyer, and others on here, for example } Good conversations and not confrontational, but a learning experience for all. Met several other posters here on agtalk. I'm retired now but still log in daily to see what info I can pass on to my nephews who took over when I retired. I started experimenting with no-till back in 1980, tried ridge till for 6 years before going back to no-till. Did some strip-til with dry p&k for several years and after some trials comparing that to broadcast and no-till, I went back to straight no-till for ROI vs equipment cost. Old timers discussion was great for exchanging ideas and experience without condemning anyone for what they were trying. What works for one in their area may not or might work in my area. Knowing your soils and location is important! You normally can use some or all of someone else's data on your farm, with some modifications for your managment style. Keep an open mind, play with the data you glean, modify it for your own area and use/equiment and have fun.
